-$- Dyson DC24 Ball All Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner

This is one of the smallest and also one of cheapest offerings in the Dyson line of uprights. It features the Dyson ball (not to be confused with a Dyson sphere), which along with its small size and weight makes it incredibly maneuverable. Suction is average at best, especially compared to the larger models. Good thing the cyclone techonology prevents loss of suction, because you will need every bit of it.

On hard flooring you're better off with a shop vac as this will often just push dirt around rather than pick it up. On carpet performance is adequate but lack of edge cleaning is frustrating and the rotating brushes also have a tendency to tangle easily with hair. The cord is too short, often requiring switching outlets in larger rooms. It would probably be a better idea just to have a short on-vac cord and let the owner supply their own extension cord (like most power tools) given how useless it is.

The two filters used in the vac are permanent and washable. While this may seem to be a good feature by the designers, the filter in the ball is hard to access, takes over a day to air dry, and after a few washings acquires a nice hot, cooked mildewy odor which the vac then spreads across the house. There's a cleaning wand that pops out of the handle in a convoluted and complex fashion that takes more time than it should. When you've deployed the cleaning wand you'll find that it's short and pathetically knocks the vac over and lifts it when you try to clean anything higher than a coffee table. There are two attachments, an edge cleaning tool and some type of brush. In my experience only the edge cleaning tool has the adequate suction to be of any use.

Construction quality is cheap and plasticky. The power and brush buttons often require several good stabs to actually do anything. It's probably a better idea leave the power button to "on" and just unplug it to save time.

Good thing that it comes with a 5 year warranty--which I haven't had to use, yet.

In short:

Pros: small, light, cheapest of the Dyson line of uprights, good warranty

Cons: average suction which is unacceptable on hard floors, short extension cord, short hose on cleaning wand, still expensive, washable filters are a pain to wash and start to smell, cleaning wand is cumbersome and irritating to use

Advice: Don't buy this overpriced underperforming vacuum.
